Holiday Creativity
Nov 01, 2023The holiday season is upon us, and it's the perfect time to start planning, getting creative and infusing some fresh ideas into your celebrations. While it's easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle, these five suggestions will help you slow down, make meaningful memories, and create a holiday season to remember.
-
Host a Friendsmas Potluck and Second-Hand Gift Exchange:
The holiday season often feels too short, with December filled to the brim with festive activities and obligations. To make the most of this joyous time, consider hosting a Friendsmas potluck and a unique gift exchange. Plan it for late November or early January to spread the holiday cheer over a more extended period, alleviating the stress of the holiday rush. Challenge your friends to find second-hand treasures under a $10 budget. This approach not only encourages sustainability but also allows you to discover unique and meaningful gifts. You'll be amazed at the thought and creativity your friends put into finding these special items.
-
Slow Down and Prioritize Quality Time:
The heart of the holiday season is not found in the abundance of gifts but in the quality time spent with loved ones. For those with children, it's especially crucial to ensure that the holidays are enjoyable for everyone, including you. Start planning early to make December less hectic and more enjoyable. Embrace your favorite holiday traditions and evaluate whether they still bring joy. If not, consider replacing them with new, more enjoyable activities. Spend time sipping hot chocolate while going for a drive admiring the best Christmas light house displays in town, go tobogganing, enjoy fondue or Chinese food on Christmas Eve, or my personal favourite make breakfast for dinner and watch classic holiday movies (Home Alone) with your family. Prioritizing these moments will help you appreciate the true magic of the season.
-
Ditch the Family Gift Exchange for a Twist:
Instead of the traditional family gift exchange, add a fun twist by having everyone buy their own gift. Wrap it, bring it to the gathering, and have a guessing game to determine who bought what. You can even introduce additional rules or twists, like a steal option, to make it more exciting. After the reveal, share your reasons for selecting your particular gift, fostering conversation and deeper connections. This unique approach adds a fresh and engaging element to your holiday celebrations.
-
Go Minimal with Decorations:
Simplicity can be beautiful, and that includes your holiday decorations. Embrace the "less is more" philosophy when it comes to decorating your home. Reducing the clutter of decorations can save you time and money, allowing you to focus on quality over quantity. Minimalistic decor can create an elegant and peaceful atmosphere. Extend this approach to your gift wrapping with brown paper, twine, and a sprig of spruce for a rustic and environmentally friendly touch.
-
Forgo Gifts to Your Outer Circle:
Simplify your gift-giving circle by focusing on your inner circle and opting for quality time with friends and extended family. Plan activities like a baking day, brunch with friends, or a family game night that resembles a Winter Olympics event. Spending time together and making memories when executed properly will be more valuable than exchanging physical gifts.
This holiday season, take the time to consider what truly matters to you. Focus on activities and events that evoke the feelings we all desire during this time: love, joy, peace, connection, and giving. By incorporating these creative ideas into your celebrations, you'll create a holiday season filled with genuine moments and cherished memories. From my house to yours, I wish you a joyful holiday season and hope it propels you into a wonderful 2024.
